Congratulations on a magnificent team effort from City Island Rowing at this year's USRowing Youth National Championships. Everyone played their part and contributed to a tremendously successful campaign. We were thrilled to have so much support on the sidelines thanks to the cheering of so many athletes (including novii and even our new Learn to Rows), alumni and of course parents!!
Our girls Varsity double did exceptionally well to make the B Final and had an amazing 2nd 1000m, moving from 5th to 3rd with an inspirational sprint. It was smiles all around as Eva and Kayla returned to the dock. Given that the A Final field was reduced to 5, the girls finished 8th in the nation - not bad for two Sophomores!!
Our girls V4x had a superb heat that saw them finish second in what was the best I have ever seen them race. A tough semi saw them through to the B Final. The girls had a great start and led through the 1000m mark. It was a do or die battle as they approached the finish, but in the end they were just outlasted by GMS and California Yacht Club into 3rd place and a 9th in the Nation overall ranking. Great job girls! With 3 athletes returning next year, there is reason for great expectations!
The tough weather and condensed progression system denied our Lt4+ the opportunity to find their stride. Such a pity as they had found so much speed and professionalism in the weeks leading up to Nationals. However, their 19th in the Nation ranking is one of which to be tremendously proud.
Having graduated so much experience last year, this was always thought to be a "building year". 3 Boats to Nationals, 2 of which finishing top 10, is a testament to the awesome family we call City Island Rowing.
Despite being probably the smallest girls team in NY, we finished with the best results of all teams in the City / Westchester / Long Island area - and second only to Saratoga Rowing Association (congratulations on Silver in the 4x!) in the entire State!
- Go City!
